And The Crowd Goes Wild!

No, these are not fans at a Led Zeppelin reunion show as Page and Plant
take the stage.
It is the Egyptian humanity in Tahrir Square reacting to the news of Hosni's capitulation.
But my advice is the same for both scenarios...Turn it up!

And check in daily with Juan Cole and Robert Fisk for the most reliable, detailed and well-informed reporting on the continuing evolution of the Egyptian revolution.

Another brutal dictator warmly backed by the US, overthrown by his own people... it's not new. The hypocrisy of US leaders is so overwhelming you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Real democratic leaders like Chavez in Venezuela, or Evo Morales in Bolivia.... people elected fairly by an overwhelming majority of the people, yet they are really terrible guys. (Terrible for US big business interests, weapons manufacturers, etc, of course.)

Then you've got the dictators like Suharto in Indonesia, loved by all US leaders, "our kind of guy" as the Clinton administration called him, right up until he was overthrown in 1999.... or Marcos in the Philippines, a Reagan favorite, overthrown in 1986, or the Shah in Iran, overthrown in 1979, and we could go on and on with examples. Noam Chomsky and William Blum have been the best writers chronicling these things.
I also try to watch Democracy Now (maybe the best daily news program in the US) everyday to get a good perspective on what's going on.

We can only hope that somehow the Saudis will be able to overthrow their dictators someday... they don't even *pretend* to have democracy in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps a long shot, as any uprising would be brutally crushed by their military, using US made weapons.
